AXE LEAGUES
Bury the Hatchet axe leagues give throwers the opportunity to compete in organized matches while developing consistency, accuracy, and technique.
Depending on your location and season, different axe league formats may be available.
Whether your goal is to compete at a higher level or simply become the person everyone suddenly regrets challenging to axe throwing, league gives you the opportunity to keep improving.
DON’T OWN AN AXE?
No problem. You don’t need to go shopping before joining your first league. Equipment is available at Bury the Hatchet so new throwers can get started without purchasing their own axe.
As you become more involved in the sport, you may eventually decide you want your own equipment but it isn’t necessary to start.
KNIFE LEAGUES
Knife throwing requires its own technique, rhythm, and accuracy, making it a completely different experience from throwing an axe.
And just like axe league, you don’t need to be an experienced knife thrower to join.
DON’T OWN THROWING KNIVES?
We’ve got you. Throwing knives are available to borrow at participating locations, so you can learn the discipline without buying equipment first.

COMPETITIVE THROWING
Participating leagues may follow standardized competitive rulesets, including formats associated with organizations such as the World Axe Throwing League (WATL) and World Knife Throwing League (WKTL).
For some throwers, league night is simply their weekly night out. For others, it’s where a competitive hobby begins. You decide how far you want to take it.

Good. Seriously. You don’t need competitive throwing experience to join a Bury the Hatchet league.
A lot of league members start exactly where you are. Maybe you’ve thrown once or twice. Maybe you’ve never thrown at all.
Our Axe Masters and experienced league members can help you understand the basics, learn how matches work, and get comfortable with league play.
You’ll probably be surprised by how quickly you improve when you’re throwing regularly. Your first week is about getting started, not being perfect.

League pricing varies depending on the league format and Bury the Hatchet location. Your league registration covers the full league season rather than requiring you to pay separately each week. Payment plans are available!

HOW DOES LEAGUE WORK?
Bury the Hatchet league seasons run between 5 and 8 weeks.
Each week, you’ll arrive at your scheduled league time, warm up, and compete in your scheduled matches. Matches traditionally consist of 10 throws, with four matches per night.
Over the course of the season, you’ll throw against different members of your league while working to improve your scores and position in the standings.
Then comes the finale.
SEASON FINALE: PLAYOFFS
The regular season leads into a final tournament where league members compete to determine the season’s top finishers. It’s your chance to put everything you’ve learned throughout the season to the test.
But don’t worry if you’re not fighting for first place. League is just as much about beating your own scores as it is about beating the person standing in the lane next to you.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL LEAGUE NIGHT LOOK LIKE?
League night is pretty simple.
ARRIVE & CHECK IN
Get settled, catch up with everyone, and get ready to throw.
WARM UP
Get your arm moving and find your throw before matches begin.
PLAY YOUR MATCHES
You’ll compete against other league members according to that night’s schedule.
TRACK YOUR SCORES
Your matches contribute to your season results and standings.
HANG OUT & THROW
One of the best parts of the league is the community that develops around it.
You’ll see many of the same people every week, celebrate great throws, talk a little trash, and probably spend more time discussing axes than you ever expected.
Then you come back next week and do it again.
DO I NEED TO BE GOOD AT AXE THROWING?
Absolutely not! If everybody waited until they were “good enough” to join league, we’d have a lot fewer axe throwers.
League is one of the best places to have fun and eventually become a better thrower. You’ll throw more consistently, learn from the people around you, experiment with your technique, and start discovering what works best for you.

DO I NEED MY OWN EQUIPMENT?
Nope.
Bury the Hatchet has equipment available for league members to use.
If you already have your own axe we’re just going to make sure it fits the league requirements!
For knife leagues, throwing knives are also available to borrow at participating locations.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
You don’t need much.
Bring yourself, comfortable clothing, and closed-toe shoes.
If you have your own approved throwing equipment, you’re welcome to bring it where permitted.
Most importantly, bring a willingness to learn.
We’ll handle the targets.
IS IT TEAM BASED?
Our standard leagues are individual competitions, so you don’t need to put together a team to join. You’ll compete against different throwers throughout the season, with your own scores and results counting toward your individual standings.
That doesn’t mean you have to come alone! Friends can absolutely sign up for the same league and compete against each other.
Check and see if your location is hosting a Duals League.
WHAT IF I MISS A WEEK?
Life happens. If you know you’re going to miss a league night, talk with your league coordinator or location as early as possible.
Makeup procedures can depend on the league format and schedule, so your local Bury the Hatchet can explain the options available for your specific league.
HOW MUCH DOES LEAGUE COST?

HOW LONG IS LEAGUE NIGHT?
The exact length of league night depends on the number of throwers and league format.
Your location can provide the expected schedule when you register.
We recommend arriving a little early so you’re checked in and ready when league begins.
IS LEAGUE SUPER COMPETITIVE?
It can be as competitive as you want it to be.
You’ll find people who want to climb the standings and also people who just love throwing and hanging out every week.
Those people can compete against each other and still have a great time. That’s part of what makes league fun.
WHEN AM I ABLE TO PRACTICE?
Every league member receives 6 FREE one-hour practice sessions per season!
Practice sessions can be used any day we’re open, with the exception of Friday nights and Saturdays.
Use them to dial in your throw, work on your consistency, try out new techniques, or just get some extra reps in before your next league night.
Six free practices. Plenty of chances to sharpen your skills.
WHAT IF I WANT TO TRY IT BEFORE COMMITTING?
Not sure whether league is for you? Ask your local Bury the Hatchet about opportunities to experience league play, upcoming introductory events, or whether you can stop by and learn more before the next season begins.
You might walk in thinking you’re just going to give it a try. Don’t be surprised if you’re shopping for your own axe a few weeks later.
